Reaction To The George Zimmerman Verdict…

I have been avoiding posting any remarks about the trial until the verdict had been rendered and last night as I walked out of the movies my social networks were going haywire with the news that George Zimmerman had been found not guilty.

I can honestly say that while I was not surprised by this outcome it still gives me great pause. The fact that he was not held accountable for the death of Trayvon Martin proves that there is little to no justice being served by our judicial system.

It’s a sad day when there have been numerous of other cases involving lesser crimes that have rendered jail time but the MURDER of an unarmed teenager is not held to the same standard. The standard of dog fighting which put Michael Vick away for two years or the standard of tax evasion which recently landed Lauryn Hill in federal prison. Please forgive me for being under the impression that human life is far more valuable than that of an animal or more money for the government to control. Not to mention a previous case in Florida where Marissa Alexander, a Black woman was denied protection under the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law and was sentenced to twenty years for firing warning shots against her abusive husband. Talk about injustice!

I’m afraid that this verdict will now set the tone for other so-called vigilantes to go out and commit crimes under the assumptions of stereotypes with the mindset that they too can get away.

Trayvon’s father made a statement via twitter last night thanking everyone for their support:

God blessed Me & Sybrina with Tray and even in his death I know my baby proud of the FIGHT we along with all of you put up for him GOD BLESS.  Thanks to everyone who are with us and who will be with us [so] we together can make sure that this doesn’t happen again.  Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY BABY TRAY

His mother also tweeted:

Lord during my darkest hour I lean on you. You are all that I have. At the end of the day, GOD is still in control. Thank you all for your prayers and support. I will love you forever Trayvon!!! In the name of Jesus!!

I can only imagine how difficult this process must have been for them. My heart truly goes out to the family and they will continue to be in my prayers.

While George Zimmerman is free from jail time, his life will never be the same, therefore he will never be FREE.
