The past few weeks have been hectic to say the least. Between managing my personal life (family, school, work, etc) and working diligently on several other projects, I’ve had very little time to post anything here.
Normally, I don’t have a problem with always being on the go however in the midst of my daily efforts as of late, a great sense of under appreciation has crept in causing me to feel like I’m doing WAY too much. It’s funny how many directions people will try to pull you in when you make yourself available to them but it never ceases to amaze me that even those with the best intentions, often do it without showing their appreciation.
So what to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed and under appreciated???
Appreciate others. Even though it can be extremely difficult to show appreciation toward those you feel don’t do the same for you, it’s still important that you do. I’m a firm believer in the golden rule of treating others how you want to be treated. Don’t let their shortcomings cause you to become bitter and miss out on your blessings.
Reward yourself. My mama always taught me to treat myself and while it’s nice to be treated by others, it’s important to do it for yourself. It doesn’t even have to be anything major, just something to recognize your efforts and accomplishments. For me, a day at the spa or mini shopping spree will go a long way!
Evaluate the situation. Rather it be a family, friendship, relationship or work related issue, evaluation is key. If you consistently find yourself feeling overwhelmed and under appreciated, address it. If there’s no improvement, you might reconsider how much of yourself you pour into that situation. Unfortunately, some people won’t really value your contributions until they’re no longer being made.
At the end of the day, I’ve never needed my name in lights or anything. I just need to feel like the people I constantly hit the pavement for aren’t taking my efforts for granted. My reward has always come from a genuine sense of being valued. Time is one of the most valuable assets we have and how we choose to spend that time speaks volumes.
Have you felt overwhelmed and under appreciated? Do something to show someone else your appreciation today.
