So You Talk A Good Game…

Talk Is CheapYou ever notice how the majority of people who talk about helping others are the main ones who never really step up to the plate when it comes time to actually do so?

This ungodly trend is often displayed amongst some of the most successful people and especially within the Black community. It’s as if they are only willing to help you with limited amounts of information because of the whole “you can succeed but not surpass me” mentality.

Well I’ve spent the last few months working as an assistant to a very successful business owner, black business owner at that. One who seemed to break the mold and willingly take on more of a mentorship role than employer but turned out to be just like the rest of the “so you talk a good game” society.

I mean he went on and on about helping individuals reach their desired level of success, giving back to the community and stressed the importance of me taking full advantage of having someone like him as a mentor. Not one to let my guard down easily, just as I allowed myself to buy into the hype by reaching out to him for feedback on a particular matter, I quickly came to the realization that it was nothing more than fluff. He too, talked a good game. Willing to divulge his so-called secrets to success but wanting someone to basically kiss his ass to get them (excuse my language). I’ve always been able to play the game but kissing ass, is something I absolutely refuse to do and yes, there is a difference.

Even as I write this post, I have no regrets for the time spent. I am honest enough to say that I did learn more than a few things which I will forever remember on my journey. It’s just disappointing to have what I thought was a great opportunity end this way especially considering the fact that more than a few in my circle tried to warn me the other shoe would drop soon and I defended the situation in a way that I don’t normally do. Eat cake! However, I am reminded of the old adage, when one door closes, another opens.

On To The Next One!

  1. People are rarely what they promote. Black, white blue or green. I’ve experienced the shiftless in several communities. But, you’re right. here comes your open door.

    Keep pressing…

  2. I enjoyed reading this entry … **immensely**. And y’all are right, genuine folks seem to be so rare in this day and age, especially in old-guard Corporate America. Here’s to success in your every endeavor, Artesia.

    This was awesome. =)
