It’s rare that you hear of marriage being referred to as anything long-term these days. I’m sure when people get married they have every intention of keeping their vows of ‘for better, for worse‘ and ‘till death do us part‘ but sometimes life’s ups and downs prevent that from happening.
During the past week it did my heart good to see a couple receive national recognition, being named the Longest Married Couple in the United States for their eighty plus year marriage.
John and Ann Betar got married November 25, 1932. He is now 101 and she is 97 years old. The two grew up as neighbors, John used to drive her to school and they fell in love. But when Ann’s father promised her to someone else, she and John decided to elope and here they are 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren later.
When asked what the secret was to a long marriage, they replied:
Compromise and don’t hold a grudge.
John also had this to say:
We just live with contentment and we don’t live beyond our means. Just go with the flow.
Sounds simple enough doesn’t it???
I don’t know about any of you but I’ve always been a sucker for a good love story. However, I’m convinced they just don’t make them like this anymore. Congrats to the happy couple and kudos to those that stick it out daily through the trials that come with being married.
