Why Corporate America Doesn’t Work For Me…

Corporate AmericaAfter years of working in Corporate America, I quickly came to the realization that it just isn’t for me. By no means is this post a knock to those of you that may be head over heels in love with it and well on your way to achieving the success you desire or to those that have already reached their plateau by way of it.

So let’s talk why…

I crave too much freedom when  it comes to the workplace.

The imaginary thought of punching a clock absolutely irritates me, even though I’m a very timely individual. In addition to that, I have never been big on the whole micro-management thing. I have always been well-organized with great time management skills of my own therefore I believe that as long as I’m getting my work done effectively, I should be left alone if it’s not about something that requires my immediate attention. Then there’s the whole issue of being made to work more hours than your regular schedule. I actually have a life outside of work and never liked to be forced to work overtime which also brings me to the limitations placed on using your personal paid time off. Why give it to me, if I can’t use it at my discretion without being penalized?

I believe leaders should lead by example.

I wasn’t raised by the old saying “Do as I say, not as I do” therefore its hypocrisy sickens me. I feel if you’re telling me to do something, you should be ready, willing and able to do the same exact thing if necessary. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand full well that there are certain privileges that come with being at the management level but at some point, who’s holding management responsible for their actions or the lack thereof?

I never learned the art of kissing up to people.

When it comes to advancement and growth opportunities, I believe that hard work should pay off and not favoritism. I’ve never been one to mix business with pleasure or sacrifice my personal morals so in previous experiences I was often passed over for better opportunities because I wasn’t in the in-crowd so to speak even though I was a harder, more experienced worker than some of those that were climbing the corporate ladder ahead of me.

Is Corporate America for you???

I have always been grateful for the opportunities presented to me but by the same token, I have also always had a very strong desire to create my own piece of the pie. One where I can do what I love and officially play by my own rules.
